The Cascade Pacific Council of the Boy Scouts of America adopts new COVID safety measures to ensure safe, in-person Scouting activities across 18-county region

March 18, 2021 (Portland, OR) – After more than a year of re-inventing Scouting to become almost entirely virtual and family-centered during the COVID-19 pandemic, the local Boy Scouts of America (BSA) council announced today it is re-opening in-person activities to small groups across its 18-county region.

The new measures adopted by the Cascade Pacific Council combine Oregon & Washington state safety guidelines with recommendations from the council’s COVID Safety Task Force. It allows for all Scout units to safely meet in person with groups of 10 individuals and two Scout Leaders as long as they follow county and BSA guidelines which include such protocols as health checks, meeting outdoors and wearing masks.

While older Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouting units in Oregon have been cleared to meet since early February, this means Cub Scouts, the youngest group of Scouts in the BSA program (boys and girls in grades K-5) and all Scouts in Southwest Washington can also meet now in-person in small groups.

“We are ecstatic to start carefully re-booting Scouting for all of our youth,” said Todd McDonald, council Director of Program. “While most schools remain closed and kids are feeling disconnected, this re-opening of in-person activities is going to give our Scouts a feeling of normalcy, which will be an incredible boost to their mental and physical health.”

The council has adopted recommendations that include health screening, monitoring, social distancing, wearing masks and other meeting-specific guidelines and protocols.  A full guide can be downloaded at https://cpcbsa.org/covid
