It all began in 1927…

 Following the fire that burned down the Council’s “Camp Chinidere” in in25, Scout Executive G. H. “Chief Obie” Oberteuffer, scouted the Council territory for a place to build a new summer camp for the Scouts. As luck would have it, a friend of the Spokane Scout Executive was looking to sell his coastal property south of Tillamook, Oregon. The Spokane Scout Executive immediately thought of “Obie.” Following a visit to the property, (what others called “useless land”) Obie knew this was the place for a new Scout camp and set about the purchasing of it. And with $10,000 from the Council budget, $6,000 of insurance money and a $5,000 gift from Aubrey Watzek, 1,000 acres were purchased in 1926 for what would become the Meriwether/Clark Scout Reservation. 

Obie was a horseman from the very beginning. He was fond of horses and saw to it that they became a prominent feature of the camp operation. 1927 was the second year of Summer Camp on the Meriwether/Clark Scout Reservation and that’s when our horse program made its first official appearance.

For many years he taught riding classes every morning and sometimes every afternoon during the camp period. This was the only extra charge activity in the camp. Back then, Scouts were charged $2 per camper for eight one-hour lessons in riding.  (Learn more in “An Early History of camp Meriwether” which can be purchased at the camp trading post or in the CPC Scout Shop.)
