University of Scouting

About

The University of Scouting is an annual supplemental training event for adult leaders in Scouting America, designed to provide in-depth training across various program areas. Open for all adult leaders, regardless of function or program area. Whether you are new to the program or a veteran of many years, U of S is packed with fun, learning, and fellowship to help you enhance your ability to deliver a fun and exciting program to your Scouts.

Purpose and benefits of attending
  • Enhance Skills: Attend a wide range of courses that go beyond basic training, covering areas like outdoor skills, leadership, and unit operations.
  • Knowledge and Resources: Become equpied with tools and ideas to improve the Scouting experience for youth.
  • Networking: Connect with and learn from other experienced Scouters.
Curriculum and Format
  • Multiple “Colleges”: Courses are typically organized into colleges covering Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Adventure Scouting (Venturing and Sea Scouting), and General Studies (topics relevant to all programs).
  • Variety of courses: Includes a diverse range of topics, from knot tying and camping skills to leadership and program planning.
  • Experienced instructors: Classes are led by experienced Scouters who share their knowledge and passion.
  • One-day Event: Annual event during the first weekend in November.

College of Youth Leadership (CYL)

Unleash Your Potential

The College of Youth Leadership (CYL) is youth-led leadership training open to all registered Troop-aged Scouts who want to enhance their leadership skills, share ideas, and enjoy a day of fellowship with other Scouts from around the council. 
Details:
  • Focus: Youth-led leadership training program, emphasizing hands-on learning through interactive presentations, games, and fellowship among participants.
  • Target Audience: It’s open to registered Troop-aged Scouts who are interested in enhancing their leadership skills.
  • Benefits: Participants gain a deeper understanding of leadership concepts, develop practical skills applicable within their troop and beyond, and build confidence. Youth leadership trainging has proven to make a positive impact on the lives of graduates and the units they lead.
  • Youth Leadership Development: The College of Youth Leadership acts as a stepping stone within a broader youth leadership journey in Scouting America. It helps prepare youth for advanced courses like National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). 

Tracks: 

    • Introductory Track: Geared towards newer Scouts (ages 11-13 or 14-15 with less experience) focuses on fundamental leadership skills for leading a patrol, including small group leadership, team building, and goal setting.
    • Advanced Scout Track: Designed for older Scouts (ages 14-17) aiming to become Senior Patrol Leaders or further develop their leadership abilities, building on existing skills and helps Scouts refine their leadership potential.
