Climbing
“Growth by challenge, challenge by choice.”
About
Climbing Programs offer Scouts an exhilarating opportunity to challenge themselves on both natural rock formations and constructed climbing walls. Whether they are beginners learning the basics or experienced climbers refining their skills, participants will engage in safe, supervised climbing experiences that foster teamwork, confidence, and resilience. With trained instructors guiding them through every step, Scouts will develop technical climbing abilities, safety awareness, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. The program is designed to accommodate various skill levels, ensuring that every Scout can reach new heights, both physically and mentally.
Units with their own certified instructors are encouraged to reach out to the Climbing Committee for additional instructor support and gear assistance for unit-specific outings.
The mission of the CPC climbing committee is to foster individual growth through challenge by enabling indoor and outdoor climbing activities within the Cascade Pacific Council, according to the guidelines set out by BSA National committees and the guide to safe scouting.

Training Courses
Climbing instructor training is extensive with The Guide to Safe Scouting requiring at least two trained climbing instructors for every climbing activity. To support this requirement, the Council and the Climbing Committee are committed to provide training for prospective climbing instructors for unit level activities.
BSA Climbing Instructor Training – Level 1 (Tower Only)
This course will introduce you to BSA Climbing Instructor skills, focusing on those needed to facilitate climbing at the Meriwether Tower. We will cover the appropriate BSA regulations, Tower operating procedures, Belaying, Rappelling, Climbing, as well as the basics of anchor setting and climbing facilitation. This is a an easy “on ramp” to start your journey in Climbing!
BSA Climbing Instructor Training – Level 2
This class is intended to train experienced climbers up to the BSA Level II Climbing Instructor level. It is a two-weekend course, usually in April and May. The first weekend is “ground school”, with hands-on practice. The second weekend is a “practical” where you will go through set-ups, climbing, supervision, and emergency scenarios. Attendance at both weekends is required. Students can earn the Level I or Level II card, depending on the proficiency that they exhibit during the course
