Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)

About

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is a required training course for Cub Scout leaders who want to take their Pack on overnight camping trips. It provides the skills and knowledge needed to plan and conduct safe, fun, and engaging outdoor experiences for Cub Scouts and their families.

This hands-on training covers essential topics such as:

  • Camping Skills – Tent setup, campsite selection, and basic outdoor cooking
  • Safety & First Aid – Understanding BSA policies, risk management, and emergency procedures
  • Outdoor Program Planning – Organizing activities like hiking, campfire programs, and nature exploration
  • Cub Scout-Specific Camping Guidelines – Age-appropriate activities and Pack camping requirements

BALOO is designed for at least one trained leader in every Pack to ensure safe and successful outdoor adventures. It typically includes both an online pre-course and an in-person, overnight training experience led by experienced Scouters.

The online prerequisite training is available in the Scouting Learn Center on My.Scouting
