“Chief Obie” (G. H. Oberteuffer), was the Portland Council’s Scout Executive starting in 1925.

Despite being 120 miles from Portland (a 4-hour drive at the time), no roads to the beach, acreage thick with salal except for one small clearing, and no access to a beautiful lake on the property, Chief Obie knew in his heart that this was the place for the Council’s next Scout camp.  In 1926, the Council purchased the land from the Chamberlain family and four months later, opened with their first summer Camp for Scouts.
